Castro (BG)

From Riva di Solto one arrives at Castro in only a few minutes. The road to drive to get there is full of curves, but shows enchanting panoramas too. Small inlets alter the rocky coastlines that fall sheer to the lake, creating for the visitor views of splendid colours.  Castro is the smallest medieval village of the lake surroundings. Its historical centre, with its narrow alleys, is built around the ancient church Parocchiale S. Giacomo. In the end of the 19th century there was a demografic growth thanks to the development  of industrial activities.

San Giacomo: We don’t know a lot about the church’s foundation year, but we know that CASTRO became a parochial in 1360, was damaged by the flood in 1535 and transformed in 1774.After the church was declared not sacred anymore, the inside has been completely stripped.  Stuccoes and frescos have been ruined by the inclemency of weather.

Natività Santa Maria Santissima: The Natività di Maria Santissima Church is of the thirteenth century, it's a cemeterial  church with a hut-like façade and it has a massive campanile with double lancet windows separated by a small pillar.

San Lorenzo: You don't have to miss San Lorenzo Church of the twelfth century, which stood in a rock, you can reach it going along a path overlooking Castro and the lake. The small romanesque church has a hut-like façade with a semicircular apse, the interior with a single nave and stone walls is illuminated by the three windows of the apse.
