MONTISOLA - Il
NAET,
typical boat of Iseo lake |
|
Its shape recalls the most known gondola in Venice. The need of
connection with the land and the fishing activity that had great
importance on the island turned many inhabitants of Montisola
into skilful master carpenters. The legend tells that a man
named Archetti, having sketches of Venetian shipyards, wanted to
adapt the shape of the gondola for the fresh waters of Iseo
lake. Also the techniques used for the construction of the boat’
s frame recall the method used in the Venetian lagoon. Not to
disregard the fact that the territories of Bergamo and Brescia
were for long time dominated by the Serenissima. The wood used
for the construction of the NAET is the chestnut and the larch.
A more careful analysis of the various pieces of the boat and of
their names, it would date the first constructions of the Naet
from the Middle Ages.
The LANCIA,
another boat common on Iseo lake, used by boatmen, it had been
used for transport. Its shape, similar to Naet, has a larger
bottom and a seat along its sides for sitting of passengers.
Some wooden or metal arches were used for stretching a length of
cloth, that could be used as a protection from rain or sunshine.
Some bigger boats were used for transport of merchandise. The
coming of motorboat was the end of a period to be romantically
remembered, when also a lot of women were “boatmen”.
