SALE MARASINO

Sale Marasino can be called one of the most beloved places by
visitors, because of its perfect location in front of Monte Isola
and of course close to the quiet and peaceful surroundings. It
offers very fine hotels too. Centuries ago Sale Marasino lived a
very wealthy period. You can see that especially looking at the
facades of buildings and the various villas in town. Some
examples: Casa Turla and Casa Tempini alongside the
Sebina main road and Palazzo Mazzocchelli and Villa
Martinengo.
Driving through
the streets that lead to Conche and Gandizzano one can enjoy
magnificent views of the lake and of Monte Isola.
From Sale Marasino it is easy to reach Monte Isola
or any other place on the lake by fast boat services.

San Zenone: |
|

Erected in 1737 in late Baroque style, has a façade Parish
of St. Zenone (eighteenth century). The majestic church is
located opposite the lake to emphasize its role as a
religious point of reference, but also cultural, for the
whole area of the coast. The access flight of steps is from
nineteenth century, the same is the facade that dates back
to 1893 and is the work of Carlo Melchiotti from Brescia.
The magnificent building was built in 1737-54 by G.B. Canina
from Bergamo. Decorated with precious frescoes and Baroque
works of Giovanni Zanardi and Francesco Monti from Bologna,
by Filippo Velizzi from Como and G.B. Cagini. Featuring six
side altars: the altar of Our Lady of the Rosary with
altar-piece by G.B. Sassi from Milan, the altar of St.
Anthony with altar-piece by G.Fali, the altar of Crucifix
with three statues by Grzioso Fantoni (eighteenth century.)
The high altar with the altar - piece depicting the Madonna
and Child with Saints by Pompeo Ghitti (XVII century),
framed by the majestic wooden altarpiece of Boscaì, standing
next to the wooden statues of St. Zeno and St. James Major
by Grazioso Fantoni ( eighteenth century.). The choir was
built in walnut wood in the seventeenth century and comes
from the former parish church. The organ, built by Bolognini
in 1754, was rebuilt by Diego Porro in 1911. The sacristy
houses several valuable paintings including a painting by
Giovan Battista and Giovan Mauro della Rovere, representing
the entry of S.Carlo Borromeo in Sale Marasino. The same
area houses additional paintings dating from the XVI-XVII
century. Next to the parish is the ancient parish church (XV
century, remodeled in the 18th century) with frescoes by
Domenico Voltolini, altar piece by Orazio Pilati (1598) and
altar that houses the Dead Christ, by Grazioso Fantoni, as
well the romanic bell tower (dated between the eleventh and
twelfth centuries). |

Santuario della Madonna di Gandizzano: |

Shrine of Our Lady of Gandizzano (XV
century) The church currently has a neoclassical look.
Inside stands a wooden altarpiece with statues of St. John
the Baptist and St. Rocco with the Virgo Mater Misericordiae
in the centre. All the wooden structure was designed by
Giuseppe Bulgarini (XVII century). This is a very special
statue, as it is the only one in the area depicting the
pregnant Madonna. The statue is carried in procession
through the village during the Five-Year Celebrations of
Maria (once every years 3 and 8) in September. There are
also a remarkable Christological cycle dated 1539, two
statues of St. Peter and Paul dating from the sixteenth
century, as well a painted wooden Crucifix dating from the
end of the seventeenth century. The mechanical organ was
installed in 1889 by Giovanni Manzoni. The terracotta floor
stands a marble plaque beneath which are buried two members
of the noble Martinengo family. |

San Pietro dei Disciplini: |

Church of St. Peter and the Disciplines (XVI century). It
lies on the former 510 national route, just few meters from
the lake. It was the seat of the Confraternity of the
Disciplines. The facade has an order with portal architrave.
Inside, the interesting fresco located in the presbytery
features Christ at the Column, from the sixteenth century,
and the one of the apse by Antonio Guadagnini (XIX sec.)
representing the intercession of the Saints to the Holy
Trinity was desired by the community of Sale for a vow at
the time of the cholera. Frescos from the seventeenth
century are located along the nave. |

Antonio Abate: |
|

Church of Saint Anthony Abbot (XV century). Located in the
historical centre of Marasino hamlet. Inside, at the center
of the presbytery, on the high altar, you can admire the
fresco of St. Antonio abbey in rich mantle, with mitre and
pastoral (XV century). On side of the triumphal arch the
fine altar-piece covering this fresco, depicting The
Temptation of St. Anthony in the desert. During the patronal
festival, which is celebrated on January 17, the church
bells are the protagonists, spreading sound throughout the
afternoon, beaten by young boys and girls playing the
bell-ringers and connecting the three clappers to a wooden
craftmade contraption. |

Giovanni Battista: |
|
Church of St. John the Baptist (eighteenth
with two rows of columns with side niches. Inside, a central
plan with a roof wing. The frescoes in the presbytery area
were painted by Giulio Volpi from Lovere area. The
altarpiece, depicting the Madonna del Carmine with Saints
John the Baptist and Erasmus, is a copy of the original that
was stolen. The painter was Francesco Monti from Bologna,
who also painted Saints in the pendentives of the elegant
dome of the nave . Well preserved is also the valuable altar
piece from former church of the Disciplines, attributed to
G.B. Galeazzi, a disciple of Moretto, dated 1582 and
depicting the Madonna and Child in glory with Christ Child
and the Saints Peter, Paul, Sebastian and Roch. The building
was completely renovated in 2004.

Giacomo: |
|
Church of St. James the Apostle (XVI
century). Located in the Maspiano hamlet. The facade is
gabled and has a beautiful portal of Botticino marble.
Inside, worthseing is a splendid eighteenth-century altar in
black marble inlaid with floral motifs. The remarkable
seventeenth-century altarpiece depicting the Martyrdom of
St. James is attributed to Francesco Giugno and is housed in
a wooden frame dating from the eighteenth century, work of
local artisans. IWell preserved is also a wooden crucifix
from the second half of the seventeenth century, carried out
in the manner of the so called "Baroque Alpine" . The
paintings of presbytery and nave are of the
nineteenth-century. |

Museo degli
alpini: |
|
Alpine Museum. Small but rich museum with
relics of two World Wars, especially from the Alpine
detachment: includes munitions, an old cannon, gas masks,
wooden skis, helmets, photographs and many letters from the
battle front. The findings come from donations or have been
recovered during mountain hiking. The museum is located at
the site of the Alpine near the small church dedicated to
Holy Vincenzo Ferreri. |
